Your next step is to move straight forward on the target and release it again when your hand is parallel to the ground.
For both of these methods, you don’t want to accommodate wrist motion or try to guide the throw with your fingers when releasing an ax. You just release your grip and let it accelerate with the speed of the ax. And so your target can achieve it.
